As a mom, you may find yourself in a situation that is potentially embarrassing, but if you’re around other parents, it may be par for the course — or extremely hilarious.
The stuff of bodies
If you’re around other moms, it’s so not a big deal if your baby pukes all over you. I mean, it is to you, but it can elicit murmurs of sympathy from acquaintances, or outright hilarity from your best friend.
When my first child was an exclusively-breastfed infant, he had a giant poop while I was eating out with my sister-in-law. As you may know, breastfed baby poop is mustard yellow and quite liquid. It goes everywhere and gets everywhere. After changing my poor lad in the cramped and ridiculous bathroom of this restaurant, I went back to our seat. My sister-in-law had a lot of laughter when she pointed out the poop that was still on my arm.
Today, I was at a cloth diaper swap with many babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their parents. My 3-year-old daughter was having a great time running around with the other kids. I was holding a friend’s baby and looked down and noticed that my girl had boogers and snot smeared all over her left cheek. I handed the baby back to her dad, and he laughed because Willow started removing the boogers with her own fingers. So gross, but so funny.
All you can do is laugh
Sometimes, all you can do is laugh when a child does something gross or socially inappropriate. I have a million stories that I’ve accumulated over the 17 years I’ve been parenting. Such as the time that my younger son stripped naked at Bible School when he was two years old and jumped on the couch. Or when my oldest peed in front of a ton of elderly relatives at a family party. Or when my daughter picked up poop, thinking it was something else. Or when my youngest “painted” her bedroom mirror with a potty full of pee.
